Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of an individual working as a senior civil works designer or a para-professional designer, who supports professional engineers. They perform tasks that are broad, specialised, complex and technical and include strategic areas and initiating activities. They are responsible for the design of complex projects to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements and are required to demonstrate self-directed application of theoretical and technical knowledge and initiate solutions to technical problems or management requirements.

Entry Requirements

  1. Completion of Year 12, Higher Secondary Certificate, or an equivalent qualification
  2. Age Requirement: Must be 18 years or above at the time of enrolment
  3. English Language Requirement: Academic IELTS 6.0 overall, with no band less than 5.5, or
    Upper-Intermediate level English, or Successful completion of an EAP course from an approved ELICOS/ESL centre, or evidence of completing a VET course at Certificate IV or above level in Australia.
  4. Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN): Students who do not meet the English language requirements above will be required to complete an LLN Test before enrolment

Course Structure

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in:

  • 12 units of competency:
    • 5 core units
    • 7 elective units
  • at least two (2) must be chosen from Group A
  • at least three (3) must be chosen from Group B
  • no more than two (2) units from elsewhere within this training package, or from another endorsed training package, or from an accredited course.

All elective units selected from outside this qualification must reflect current occupational and learning outcomes of this AQF qualification level.

There are no prerequisites to imported units listed in this qualification. Where a unit is imported as an elective care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified are complied with.

This course uses a variety of teaching and assessment approaches to support student learning. Learning activities may include presentations, group discussions, demonstrations, individual and team-based tasks, practical skills exercises, role plays, case studies, simulated workplace scenarios, and research activities.

Assessment methods may involve practical task observations, written and verbal questioning, case studies, role plays, reports, research assignments, and presentations.
